   Escape the bustle of the capital on a full-day tour to Fayoum Oasis from Cairo, a journey into one of Egypt's oldest inhabited regions. Known in Ancient Egypt as Shedet, called Crocodilopolis by the Greeks, Arsinoë by the Romans, and Madinat Al Fayoum by the Arabs, Fayoum was once the seat of worship of the crocodile god Sobek, and this private tour with an expert guide brings that layered history to life across several fascinating sites.

   The day begins with an early pick up from your hotel in Giza or Cairo at around 07:00, followed by the drive out to Fayoum. The first stop is the Museum of Kom Aushim, an excellent introduction to the region, exhibiting artefacts spanning from Prehistoric to Roman times, including the striking Fayoum portraits. From there, the tour continues to Karanis, once known as "The Lord's Town" and among the largest Greco-Roman cities in Fayoum, founded in the third century BC and originally home to the mercenaries of Ptolemy II's army - its ruins still include two ancient temples.

   Next on the itinerary is Hawara, also known as Arsinoiton Polis, site of the pyramid complex built by Amenemhet III during the twelfth dynasty. The tour then heads to Qarun Lake, named after the king said to have been buried nearby with his gold and riches, where lunch is served at a local restaurant overlooking the water. The day continues with a visit to Wadi El Rayan and its waterfall, a striking depression 42 metres below sea level covering an area of 673 square kilometres, which became a water reservoir in 1966 when it was connected to Qarun Lake by underground pipes.

   After a full day exploring the temples, ruins, and natural landscapes of Fayoum Oasis, the tour heads back to Cairo, rounding off a rewarding excursion through ancient history and desert scenery just outside the capital.
