Cairo, one of the largest cities in both Africa and the Middle East, is the capital of Egypt. Cairo has been a centre of great importance to many civilisations, cultures and religions. From Pharaonic and Greco-Roman to Ottoman and European, and passing by Jewish, Christian, and Islamic, each of its identities has left a strong imprint on Cairo, thus making it one of the most fascinating cities in the world. The Giza Plateau, that includes the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, is the only remaining monuments of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the country's most famous tourist attraction. The sheer mass of the pyramids is awe inspiring. Islamic Cairo, the centre of historic Cairo, is best done on foot. Located east of downtown, it is full of charming little mosques and water fountains. The most important sites to visit are the Citadel, Mohamed Ali Mosque, Khan el Khalili, the main bazaar, some historic mosques and displays of medieval architecture, as well as some of Cairo's Turkish baths or Hammams. No visit to Cairo is complete without seeing the Egyptian Museum. Exotic atmosphere, chaotic traffic, thousands of minarets, noise, charming people, Cairo is a fascinating city. Few cities in the world surpass Cairo in number of monuments or architectural styles. Cairo is not an ordinary city, Cairo is a whole world.

3 Days Bahariya Oasis & White Desert Tour (from/to Cairo)

    Guided tour
    • days 3–5

Day 1: Cairo to Bahariya Oasis and the White Desert (L, D)

Your adventure begins early, with pick-up from your hotel in Giza or Cairo at 06:00 am for the roughly four-hour, 350-kilometre drive east to Bahariya Oasis, broken up by two coffee stops along the way. As you travel, you'll pass railway tracks once used to transport iron ore to the Helwan steel mill, a reminder that Bahariya Oasis has long been Egypt's main source of iron ore. Arriving at Bahariya Oasis around 10:00, you'll meet your safari guide and switch into a 4x4 Jeep to begin exploring. The route continues to the Black Desert, named for the dark volcanic powder coating its mountains and dunes, before lunch at El Haize oasis near Bawiti, an area once prosperous under Roman rule, where you can also relax in a natural hot spring and visit the small Water Museum. Afterwards you'll drive to the Valley of Agabat deep inside the White Desert, marvelling at surreal limestone and chalk formations shaped over millions of years since the area lay beneath the sea, with time for Jeep exploration and sandboarding. As afternoon turns to evening, you'll explore the White Desert National Park itself, famous for wind-sculpted rock formations resembling chickens, sphinxes, camels and mushrooms, before setting up camp to watch the sunset and enjoy a Bedouin-style dinner under the stars, with proper camping equipment provided for a comfortable desert night.

Day 2: White Desert to Bahariya Oasis (B, L, D)

After breakfast amid the dramatic scenery of the White Desert, you'll begin the drive back toward Bahariya Oasis, stopping en route at Crystal Mountain, locally known as Gebel al-Izzaz, a striking quartzite crystal hill often called the Jewel of the Desert that sparkles in the sunlight. Continuing on, you'll soak in the warm waters of Bir Sigam, a hot spring located about 7 kilometres east of Bahariya on the Cairo road, known for having some of the best water temperatures in the region. Lunch follows at a local restaurant in Bahariya Oasis before an afternoon of discovery around Bahariya itself: wandering through palm and olive groves, visiting Gebel Maghrafa where the enormous dinosaur fossil known as Stromer's Tidal Giant was unearthed in 1914, and passing Lake al-Marun, the largest salt lake in Bahariya Oasis. The day closes with a memorable sunset from the summit of English Mountain, Gebel Al Ingleez, which offers sweeping panoramic views over the northern part of the oasis, before heading to your ecolodge hotel in Bahariya for check-in and a well-earned rest.

Day 3: Bahariya Oasis to Cairo (B)

Following breakfast at the hotel, your final day in Bahariya Oasis begins with a visit to the ancient tombs of Bannentiu and Djed-Ankh-Amun-Iuf at Qasr Selim, part of a 26th Dynasty necropolis discovered in 1938 by Egyptian archaeologist Ahmed Fakhry. From there you'll head into Bawiti, the capital of Bahariya Oasis, to explore the Museum of the Golden Mummies and the ancient temple of Ain El Muftella, both offering fascinating insight into the oasis's long history. With Bahariya Oasis's highlights explored, the tour then makes the return journey back to Cairo, bringing this desert adventure to a close.
